How Low Thyroid Function Affects Weight

The condition of the thyroid for most people is often uncared for. This is a type of gland that can cause weight gain. If one has a busy way of life that is more often stressful in nature this may cause thyroid from improper functioning. But the best part about it is that it can now be easily treated and cared for in this modern day and age.

This gland is characterized by its small butterfly-shape. It is very light and found in the lower portion of your voice box in the neck area. The thyroid controls the rate of metabolism and helps transform calories into energy fast. This is how it affects weight gain for the most part.

What causes the improper functioning of the thyroid? There are many aspects that affect the thyroid. It can begin from the wrong or unhealthy food choices. It can also be hereditary, sensitivity to some food types and even aging. If one suffers from thyroid problems they are likely to gain weight primarily, accumulate water weight easily, the body easily feels cold which means the temperature is very low, dry complexion, brittle nails, constant fatigue, depression and infertility.

It is better to start seeking doctor’s advice and a medical check up particularly on the thyroid when you start to feel some changes in your weight, behavior and stamina. Your doctor would probably run a thyroid blood test but the difficulty about this condition is that it is not easily diagnosed through a physical examination alone. There should be some mental examinations as well in order to determine if you are indeed suffering from a low thyroid function.

There are some pointers that can help you enhance the state of your thyroid gland and it involves a few changes in your diet and lifestyle:

  • By taking in a large dosage of Iodine in your diet it can help the thyroid gland to enhance its performance. This refers to a higher metabolic rate and more energy for the body. One good source of Iodine is Kelp Extract that comes in capsule form. There are various seaweeds and seafood as well that contains high amount of Iodine.
  • Foods that are spicy in nature are not for mere meal enjoyment they are also a great way to increase the rate of metabolism. This includes Black or Chili Pepper, Ginger and Cinnamon. These spices can increase the amount of heat in the body and result in a quicker blood circulation.
  • Fiber has been known to provide numerous benefits and the most common of all is treating constipation. It’s important to have the foods that we consume be absorbed of its nutrients and released through bowel. If you need to eat rice it is better to opt for the brown ones. Other sources of fiber are apples, oats, bran, wheat grains and nuts.
  • Protein is also important for the thyroid’s enhancement. This is also recommended for thyroid patients. Consuming lots of lean meats, poultry, eggs and low fat dairy products is a good way to have protein daily.
